Dotted line is the DMZ (demilitarization zone)
An unnamed South Korean official told local media that both sides of the Korean conflict are in talks to announce a permanent end to the Korean War that began in 1950. Leaders of the two countries are supposed to meet in a summit next week. A truce, not a peace treaty, has been in effect since 1953.
On Wednesday, President Trump tweeted:
“Mike Pompeo met with Kim Jong Un in North Korea last week. Meeting went very smoothly and a good relationship was formed. Details of Summit are being worked out now. Denuclearization will be a great thing for World, but also for North Korea!”
President Trump met with Japanese President Shinzo Abe at Mar-a-Lago this week. They are discussing trade and security; the U.S. has a $69 billion trade deficit with Japan.
Engine Explosion Kills One, Injures Seven
A Southwest airlines flight had to make an emergency landing on Tuesday after a piece of an engine flew into a window of the cabin. A passenger said the impact was so severe that it broke the window and the woman seated next to the window was partially pulled out of the plane. She died from her injuries. Seven other passengers were also hurt.
The plane was carrying 143 passengers and five crew members from New York to Dallas, and made an emergency landing in Philadelphia. The latest reports are that the engine threw a fan blade, which caused the damage. According to Fox News, the same thing happened in 2016 to the same airline, and same type of aircraft.
The passenger killed was Jennifer Riordan, a wife, mother, and Vice President of Community Relations for Wells Fargo. She resided in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her husband, Michael Riordan, was the former chief operating officer for the City of Albuquerque. They have two children
The pilot who safely landed the crippled aircraft is Tammie Jo Shults. She was one of the first female fighter pilots in the Navy and the first woman to fly the FA-18.
Seventeen National Guardsmen were hospitalized on Monday after their C-130 filled with smoke and fumes. The plane took off from the Delaware Air National Guard base new New Castle, DE on Monday night for a training mission.
Gorsuch Sides with Liberals,
Trump Loses on Immigration
Neil Gorsuch, the President’s first Supreme Court appointment was the tie-breaker in a case regarding immigration. The law before the court making it easier to deport illegals convicted of crimes was ruled too vague. Writing for the majority, liberal Justice Elena Kagan wrote that conviction for a crime of violence makes deportation a certainty, no matter how long the illegal has resided in the country. Therefore it should be struck down.
At question is a decision from 2015 that struck down a similarly worded part of another federal law. It imposes longer sentences on repeat criminals. The majority opinion for it was written by Justice Scalia, who died in 2016.
Tuesday’s decision involved James Dimaya, a Philippine native who came to the U.S. legally at age 13 in 1992. He was convicted of two charges of burglary and pled no contest, and immigration officials prepared to deport him. The category of crime involves substantial risk of physical force. A federal appeals court in San Francisco struck down the provision, calling it unconstitutionally vague. The Supreme Court agreed.
Trump encouraged congress to fix this problem quickly with legislation. He tweeted:
“Today’s Court decision means that Congress must close LOOPHOLES (caps added) that block the removal of dangerous criminal aliens, including aggravated felons. This is a public safety crisis that can only be fixed by Congress – House and Senate must quickly pass a legislative fix to ensure violent criminal aliens can be removed from our society. Keep America Safe!”
Mitch McConnell just blocked passage of a bill meant to protect Robert Mueller’s job as special counsel in the Trump-Russia collusion investigation. Senate Majority Leader McConnell will not allow the bill to come to the floor for a full Senate vote.
Barbara Bush Dies at 92
Barbara Pierce Bush, former First Lady, wife of President George H.W. Bush and mother of President George W. Bush, has died. She was 92.
Pray for the Bush family, and for the family of Jennifer Riordan. Pray for the healing of those who were injured in today’s airplane incidents. Thank the Lord the plane was able to land safely and injuries were kept to a minimum.
Ask God to bring out of Congress correct immigration legislation and for success in all of the negotiations with North Korea.
Psalm 48:10 – According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.
